The Major League Baseball S.T.A.R. Award program operates on Club, state, regional and national levels. This award focuses on the four characteristics of Sportsmanship, Team spirit, Achievement and Responsibility. Our organization recognized Club member Jazzlyn S as the Club member who best represented these four characteristics consistently as a participant of both our Winter Basketball and Spring Soccer leagues. Recently Jazzlyn was recognized in front of her peers at the Boys & Girls Club – CMS Site with a MLB S.T.A.R award and Certificate of Recognition. |

120 youth from our Boys & Girls Clubs Winter Basketball League participated in the Jr. Olympic Skills Competition during their teams’ basketball practice. These boys & girls each were challenged to score as many points as possible by making baskets from designated shooting areas in 45 seconds. 38 of these kids qualified for our Local Competition which was held during the March Madness end of the season event.
The following six youth earned spots to participate in the Jr. Olympic Regional Skills Competition which was held Saturday June 14, 2008 at Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet & Fitness Club in Homewood, IL.
Congratulations to the following players on their achievement of reaching the Regional Competition.

This was a memorable experience for these youth and one they will remember for years to come. The competition gave them an opportunity to showcase their skills/talents and be a part of something fun and positive.

| The CMS members were offered the opportunity to design their own skateboard. This was presented as a challenge where the winner would receive their own full size skateboard to transfer their design on to. This program ran for 3 weeks, beginning with each member creating a rough draft on a smaller paper, and then once they were ready they transferred their designs on to the larger life size poster board. The designs needed to be clean, colorful, and focused. Shown here are our first and second place design winners. 1st place winner with her name as a design was YAZMIN. Our 2nd place winner had a happy theme, created by SARAH. We had over 40 members participate in this program and the voting was very close for our top ten places. All of the members did a great job and had some very creative designs. |

Two Teen Members Named Golden Apple Scholars |
|

The Golden Apple Foundation named 125 oustanding Illinois high school and college students as Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois. The foundation is the largest pre-service teacher-support program in the nation, among the 125 students were Dundee Crown Seniors Courtnee Gonzalez and Sonalia Ramirez both club members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township.
Courtnee, a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs od Dundee Township for over 10 years and our 2007 Club Youth of the Year, will attend Illinois State University in the fall. "Being a Golden Apple Scholar will be a life long experience, and something that I look forward to." said Courtnee. Sonalia our current Youth of the Year, will be attending Northern Illinois University, she has been involved in the club for the past three years. "I feel blessed to be part of the Golden Apple Scholar program, and I am very excited to move on to the next phase of my life. The Boys & Girls Club has played an important role in gettting me to this point". said Sonalia "These two young women have worked very hard to achieve this distinction as Golden Apple Scholars, and we are very proud of them. They represent the product of our mission; To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens." said Mike Berger, Director.

Through a rigorous application and interview process, the Scholars program recruits and prepares bright and talented students, who represent a rich ethnic diversity, for successful teaching careers in schools of need throughout Illinois. In exchange for financial assistance for four years to attend one of 53 public and private universities across the state, students will participate in summer programs that include teaching intershipsand enhanced teacher preparation, and continual mentoring by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers. Scholars must agree to teach for five years in an Illinois school of need, which is a school that serves low-income students or has below par test scores. There are currently more than 1,100 Golden Apple Scholars teaching in schools of need throughout Illinois. |

Lincoln Scholastic Bowl Team earns way to the Final Four in Springfield! |

Four Club Members (Brya. Jazzlyn, Brianna & Kerri) pictured above are headed to Springfield next week to compete in the State Finals of the Lincoln Scholastic Bowl. The team consisting of students who attend Lakewood School arrived at the final by winning at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake County 280-200, then defeating the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago Little Village Unit in a sudden death tiebreaker. The team did not miss a single question in their two matches. The Lincoln Scholastic Bowl is just one of many events sponsored by the Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission leading up to Abraham Lincoln's 200th Birthday.

Village of Carpentersville makes an investment of $50,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township.
The Club appreciates that the Village government values our efforts in continuing to be a positive place for over 1,200 Carpentersville youth each year.
